Writing interesting characters in those big,end of the world scenarios is always tough as hell.

yeah he didn't mess up like Emmerich does (post ID1) but much more is expected out of del Toro.

Pacific Rim works as a fun summer popcorn movie with some fun dialogues and comedic bits. Could have been so much more in the hands of a more accomplished director. GDT is best when he does small indie like personal films than these big budget studio movies.

What made PR work were the fantastic designs of the robots and monsters and the well done large scale action with some goofy humor thrown in so we could better ignore that the overall conceit was stupid, the dialogue was terrible and the leads were blah.

Plot sounds fine, and it looks like they're gonna continue with the world-building, but Jake is such a "they didn't even try" name. Should have called him Hayrick or something, ha.

It wouldn't surprise me if in every screenplay for movies of this ilk that the protagonist is named "Jake" as a temporary placement until they can think of a better name for them (or not).
