Still not feeling excited about this. A sequel never needed to be made. The first film had a conclusive ending with a nice bow on top.

The teaser did not help with that. Also....Ellen McLain? Really?

That this would have a much more modest budget then the first film was no secret.

My own hopes for this film pretty much died when I heard that Del Toro was pretty much out except for a courtesy "Executive Producer" title.

I'm guess with Tull no longer at Legendary, they've decided to slash the budget.

Maybe, but before Tull left the announced budget was much smaller then the first PR.

For the record, the reaction of much of the industry was WTF when they heard a sequel had been greenlit. The first film managed to squeak into profit, but mant thought legendary was really pushing its luck with a sequel.

Now I wish Boyega was the hero of the first PR alongside Kikuchi, he would have been much charismatic as a lead. Thus, facing Elba as a cocky Maverick-type pilot having to learn to be more humble and less reckless would have been interesting in terms of character dynamics even if cliche as hell, part surrogate dad/mentor while keeping him away from getting romantically invested with Kikuchi to not compromise their mission.
