Birds Of Prey 71/1844 (5pm)               6:00 PM

Barely any movement on BOP sales here.   WB should have splurged for a SB Ad or at least moved up reviews since early reactions seem to be good.

COMPS:

Joker: $2.87m

Jumanji:TNL: - $4.63m

Charlie's Angels: $3.55m

Maleficent 2:  $3.8m

Our two markets seemed to track fairly similarly for H&S as well.  Wonder if the Hispanic connection is at play at all or not when comparing it to a city like Philly.

Fate of the Furious had an equal Hispanic and African American turnout at 23%, but Hobbs was 27%/20%. It might just come down to the West being a stronger market in general for F&F if there’s any noticeable difference.

New Atom deal - may provide a huge last minute weekend surge for Birds of Prey...the deal starts Feb 5 12:01pm EST and seems to be valid on ANY ticket (ala the Wonder Park deal last year, but this time for grown ups...Wonder Park surged with 4 for $20, so I imagine 5 for $25 will draw masses of college students and young adults for Fri/Sat night viewing - I mean, I'd go if I had 5 folks up for the weekend...or old enough kids:)...here's the deal...although it is "while supplies last"...

Atom Tickets: 5x Birds of Prey Movie Tickets for $25 (Starts February 5)
$25.00

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) [atomtickets.com] - Get 5 Tickets for $25
You must include at least five tickets in your basket, and the discount will then be automatically applied (while supplies last) to five tickets
Offer is valid when you see a banner promoting the offer on the website or in the app, from approximately February 5, 2020 (9:00 am PT) through February 9, 2020 (11:59 pm PT), while supplies last

Hm when I googled it the Atom site says $35

If this somehow works on IMAX/Dolby that'd be a great deal.

Dang, slickdeals failed me:).  I found the info there, so $35 might be right (their discussion is now uncertain;)...

For once, that site jumping the gun didn't quite have it right:)...

EDIT: PS - There was a morning screenshot of the deal for 5 for $25 (that got posted on the thread)...so Atom made a last second deal change...damn:(

Only one day less than yesterday, which had SB benefits. Again, nothing to report just yet, but seems impressive still.

MTC2  - overall 1291 shows 7853/226189 102404.62  +1366

I did not update yesterday night, so this is for day and half. No change in prediction. I think real action should happen in last 48 hours.

Birds of Prey (T-3)

MTC1  - overall 1466 shows 27625/310617 473736.46  +5854

MTC2  - overall 1515 shows 10227/254709 132523.97  +2374

It needs to triple the numbers for 5m previews. Should do that barring toxic reviews. I think 4x this number is possible if it gets big boost post reviews.

WB normally does not do SB spot but this movie releasing week after SB should have had a spot.

Thanks for the numbers and the optimism after the dire numbers from others. Have you taken a look at Friday presales? Does the movie look frontloaded?

Let me get back tomorrow on OD numbers. Last I check on saturday, OD PS at MTC1 was slightly over half of previews while MTC2 was on part with previews. But MTC2 has underperformed big time for previews. Ratio between MTC1/2 should have been like 3/2. Instead its like slightly over 1/3rd of MTC1.

But its PS started late and so I expect most of the action to happen on wed/thu. But it looks like WB dropped the ball on marketing this late in the game. I as said above should have gone with SB spot as its just 4 days before previews. At least reviews should have released today. Keeping things till late for a movie without insane buzz is not good. If WOM is not top notch like Joker had, it could have mediocre run.

PRE-SALES NOTE:  FF9 had 112 days of pre-sales while Hobbs and Shaw had 35.

The crashing to earth has started in earnest.  In fact, those 18 ticket sales are a little misleading as not only were 10 of them at a single theater (out of seventeen reserved seating theaters being tracked at the moment), but 6 of them were at a single showing.  So a bit skewed thanks to a spike.

Nothing else much to say except... See y'all in a week.  Maybe two! :)

(NOTE::: The next report will not have any comps whatsoever)

Birds of Prey OD

MTC1 - overall 2926 shows 17820/647118 307468.40

MTC2 - overall 2904 shows 9825/507473 118700.00

This is as of late night yesterday. So MTC1 about 60% of previews(and going up as well) while MTC2 OD is on par with preview sales. So its definitely not frontloaded. I expect previews to OW multi better than Joker.

https://deadline.com/2020/02/birds-of-prey-hopes-box-office-worldwide-projection-1202851173/

Quote

In expanding to the deeper parts of its DC universe, Warner Bros. is launching Suicide Squad spinoff Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn this weekend, repping the comic book label’s continued march into R-rated fare post Joker and Watchmen, with a projected worldwide start between $110M-$125M; a take which is just under DC’s $158.6M WW opening of Shazam last April.

We’re told at this point in time that Birds of Prey‘s global start should be fine for ultimately profiting off its gross $97.1M production cost (net $84.5M after $12.6M California tax credits).  Previews stateside start Thursday at 6PM with full Friday play at 4,200-plus locations, further buffed by PLFs, Dolby Cinema, 4DX Motion Seats and Imax formats with an eye on a 3-day of $50M-$55M. On the high-end, Birds of Prey is primed to be the 10th highest opening in February.

We’ve heard that domestic advance tickets sales at major circuits are solid and OK, nothing stupendous. Atom Tickets on their mobile app reported robust first day sales on Jan. 29, selling more tickets than Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad in the first 24-hours. Among DC pics sold by Atom, Birds of Prey had the third best first day sales after Aquaman and Joker.

The Cathy Yan-directed movie takes flight tomorrow in 73 territories including France, Korea, Indonesia, Belgium and Switzerland with a forecasted $60M-$70M launch.  The rest of the weekend will add all markets save Japan, and China where Birds of Prey has not been expected to factor, regardless of the current coronavirus epidemic (note Suicide Squad never played the PRC). There is potential for upside as the DC pic reps the first event pic since Bad Boys For Life. However, the impact of the current situation in Asia because of the coronavirus is very difficult to measure.
