The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

The fact WSS is so long probably means it's likely getting more than 2 screens at a lot of locations since it's the only wide release between now and December 17 (especially in NYC, where it's naturally gonna do best by far given its Broadway roots). Might as well when screens will need to be filled due to aging movies that will be making little by that point and the bigger auditoriums being placeholders the next two weekends for Spidey. We'll see what the sales look like, so far Disney/20th Century are giving it a pretty sizeable marketing push (it's gonna be featured heavily in that pre-recorded Disney Parks holiday special on ABC Sunday night which is being co-hosted by Ariana DeBose from the movie).

ABC and Disney Parks Announce a Flurry of Stars and Magical Surprises for Holiday Specials | Disney Parks Blog (go.com)

Right now, my Cinemarks are set for 2 and 1 screens so far for presales - that translates to 3 and 6 shows/day, since my theater goes back to its "Covid regular" hours after the Thanksgiving expanding of the hours back to 10am...

Eh, alright I ran it anyway.

Movie - Shows (Theaters) (PLF shows)

Encanto - 7,782 (2,732) (1,187 PLF)

Resident Evil - 6,428 (2,191) (38 PLF)

House of Gucci - 4,185 (2,495) (114 PLF)

I even checked Canada

Encanto - 304 (58)

Resident Evil - 55 (17)

House of Gucci - 2 (1)

Not sure if this is normal as I've never pulled preview counts for Canada before.  Looks like last week I had  291 as the max TC for my Canada sample.

No change in final preview show counts.  I also ran a comparison of Monday to Wednesday for holdovers to see how the new releases are affecting them:

Monday

Clifford - 13,248 (3,027 TC) 4.38 per
King Richard - 10,818 (2,891 TC) 3.74 per
Dune - 4,905 (1,956 TC) 2.51 per
Venom 2 - 6,578 (1,985 TC) 3.31 per
NTTD - 5,118 (1,876 TC) 2.73 per
Belfast - 1,803 (507 TC) 3.56 per

Wednesday

Clifford - 9,253 (2,609 TC) 3.55 per
King Richard - 9,003 (2,808 TC) 3.21 per
Dune - 1,504 (740 TC) 2.03 per
Venom 2 - 2,738 (1,098 TC) 2.49 per
NTTD - 1,702 (860 TC) 1.98 per
Belfast - 3,126 (903 TC) 3.46 per

These 13 shows just keep chugging along.  I'm currently seeing 1,129 theaters participating in the early access shows which means we could get a pretty significant number if it's reported.  I'd be interested to see some MTC sales for these as we get closer.

The big IMAX theater close by just published their schedule for the next two weeks and confirmed that Dune will be coming back for post-Thanksgiving weekend and have listed a 7:00 show for West Side Story on December 9. Looks like the latter is being released in the format after all, guessing the announcement will be made when tickets go on sale (which I assume will be after the first reactions drop when critics see it on Monday).

Encanto Megaplex Wednesday(193 showings)

3213(+833)/47401 in 15 theaters

Ghostbusters Friday comp: 14.32M

Black Widow Friday comp: 9.89M

This is obviously overperforming here. Even the BW comp would be a great result.

Encanto Megaplex Wednesday(193 showings)

4216(+1003)/47401 in 15 theaters

Not even gonna bother with the comps since they're obviously not happening

Can you also add counts for Encanto/Gucci/RE.

Looked back at what the Ghostbusters preview comp would've been, 1.6M. Hopefully it overperforms the comp today but not holding my breath

Added three new releases and Eternals to the Wednesday counts.  This is a sample of US counts only.
