HAN SOLO MEMORIAL (day weekend) THREAD | Solo Flops Domestically with 83M/101M weekend. Spectacularly Bombs Overseas with 65M weekend.

It's kinda weird that feige is getting credit for the succes of IW/marvel and not the directors.  In SW's case JJ took credit for TFW's success, not kathleen kennedy. says a lot about the assembly line stories accusations that plague Marvel...

With estimates, Deadpool 2 had a weaker second weekend drop (-66%) heading into a holiday weekend, than the original Deadpool (-57.4%) which was heading into a regular weekend from a holiday weekend opening. Of course, sequels are typically inevitably more frontloaded, but this does seem on the weak end for Deadpool 2. It still remains to be seen how its long term legs will pan out. It could ride some good drops in the weekends to come, and Deadpool 2 will benefit from summer weekdays, unlike the original. Overall, it is clearly doing really well worldwide (already almost $500M worldwide), relative to budget, and will be a definite success - particularly when it wasn't clear if they could pull off the 'Deadpool style' of film a second time around.

Directors deserve credit for the individual movies success but someone has to steer the overall universe and as LF/DCEU/etc have shown it’s very difficult to get that right.

on a list of reasons why Solo flopped, identity politics would probably be dead last

I don't see a direct relation indeed, but if we assume that TLJ did a ton of damage to the franchise, there you have it.

I truly see Kevin Feige replacing Alan Horn and running all of Disney Studios in about two years.

That's if he even wants the job! They still haven't found Iger's replacement.

I imagine TLJ didn't even have much of an effect, it's not even related to Solo.  the film not looking appealing and it having a shitty marketing campaign are probably stronger factors that played into Solo's performance

I wouldn't go that far.

He said he initially thought it might open to about $100M but he started buying into the tracking and the Fandago presales stories after they made the rounds.  He's trying to say now he never thought it would do that well but he certainly didn't call bullocks on those tracking numbers at the time.  Just listen to his Star Wars Talk vid from May 6 (which is still up for now).

When final tracking came out the week of with the 130M minimum, he went back to saying 100M. He talks about it at the 12:05 mark here:

Yeah, if he moves it will be vertically not horizontally (and not to a studio not doing as well currently as the one he's heading)

Yes. Her or Nate Moore.

But, that said, Feige isn’t going anyway. He has more money than God, complete creative control, and answers only to Bob and Alan. That is the stuff that dreams are made of.

TLj’s poor reception definitely played a part. Combining it with the lack of interests = the horrible numbers we have now

and what shitty marketing? Apparently Disney spent more money on marketing than Fox did on Deadpool
