EDIT: Deadline says the Tuesday/Thursday breakdown was $1.8/$7.3M...still not great for Thursday...

Grindelwald came in much higher last night with $9.1M. Note that’s not an exact like-for-like with the $8.75M Thursday night previews of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them‘s from two years ago at this time. The figure includes Tuesday sneaks at 600 locations which minted around $1.8M we hear (hence last night was $7.3M).

How did they go from $3M to $1.8M lol

Still means a $61-63m OW which isn't great but not panic alarm

Yeah, but a sub 200 million total domestic is very real now. Unless this gets a 3x multiplier, which isn't the case ( sequels are usually frontloaded ). Even if it gets a 3x multiplier, that would give it a 190 million domestic, less than The Amazing Spider Man 2's domestic numbers ( 202 million ) 4 years ago.

I don't think a sub 200m domestic will cause WB to cancel the FB series especially since OS will be much higher than TASM2's OS total.

JL did $13M and and $93.8M for 7.2x Thurs.  Since FB2 had 5pm starts (and JL wasn't quite that early), I'm not sure how much higher FB2 will go, since JL at least had the "it's at least better than we thought, but it's still not great" WOM story vs "nah, it's a little rough and confusing" WOM story...at 8x of Thursday's $7.3M, you get $60.2M (if you also add in Tuesday)...so, I can't say I'm certain this is topping $60M yet until we see Friday's number...in a JL-type continually downward-trending weekend, I could see sub-$60M...

Opening a week before Thanksgiving was probably a smart move in hindsight. Definitely going to help legs be at least slightly better than they otherwise would have been. Not to mention that after next weekend, there's practically nothing competition-worthy opening till the 14th

All they did was take money from Incredibles 2, that’s not very interesting.  Spectre was dragged across the finish line for 3 months

What about Passengers?

That was the final thing. In between there were 3 expansions including a Mother’s Day one for a movie where they are searching for their father  there were double features with Infinity War and Solo as well. It’s probably more hilarious in terms of persistence.

Venom is much better movie than fb2. It currently has a good chance of becoming biggest spidey movie worldwide, which makes me happy.

And without Spider-Man himself. A Marvel movie that features one of Spidey greatest enemies, may have a chance to beat SM3 (a movie that had both Venom & Spider-Man in it).

Spider-Man 3 would have made like 450+mil domestically in todays dollars and it's international would have been higher as well. Not a good comparison.

Yes, we all know it. When we say, a film will outgross a old movie, we are not saying that it's bigger than that old movie.

Yeah Spider-Man 3 broke the OW all time record by 13% and nothing opened 13% higher than is 151.1m until the Avengers 5 year's later, was the third biggest movie of it's year and without even considering market growth made over 1080 millions in 2018 dollar, significantly bigger movie, but it had a 365m net budget in 2018 dollar with some ridiculously big marketing campaign and featured spider-man after 2 extremely well received entry, so that is to be expected and Venom could still win the most impressive battle between the 2 here.

FF2 could very well end with around $150-160m domestic total given the reviews and audience feedback so far.

That would be a domestic performance very similar to X-Men: Apocalypse ( 155 million domestic ). Apocalypse also got a higher tomatometer than Fantastic Beasts 2. So, everything is possible.
