That’s complicated if they’ve already been paid.

It isn't about paying the actors, the issue is they have advertised every film in 2021 would be on HBOMax day and date as a way to attract subscribers.  If they suddenly pull out on that, they are going to have much bigger issues with false advertising and people getting pissed (either actually pissed or twitter outraged) that they lied to them to get them to sign up.  

 

It's done for this year.  These films will all come out when they are scheduled and on HBOMax and then back to normal in 2022.

Then why not just put a price for the premium access to their new movies? This would not renege their promise technically. Also, the subscribers subscribe HBO max on the monthly basis, not a full year commitment. If consumer feel cheated, they can just unsubscribed it anytime.

FWIW the theatrical movies aren't available with HBO Max's $9.99 plan that allows ads so the only way to access them is by paying the $14.99 one. Not quite the same as Disney hiding their movies behind a $30 paywall but definitely leaves those looking to save as much money as they can out in the cold somewhat.

But that would drive those subscribers in $14.99 tier further away from the theater right? Since they have pay so much to the fees in the first place.

Because they advertised it at no extra cost.  Here is the announcement trailer that started all this nonsense and screwed everything up for them.  They can't go back on it.

And thanks to JC, TSS (Not you!), FG, Candyman, August's gross is actually "only" 50% lower than the same month in 2019, which was overstated a bit because labour day weekend was partially in August. The first month since Mar2020 that we have a sub-50% drop from the comparable month in 2019.

 

In fact, if SC managed to break 65m 3-days OW, labour day is on the way to the biggest LD weekend in domestic history.

Those ads always had small print saying the lineup of movies was subject to change.

 

Either way I agree, it is done for this year, they are not gonna move Matrix to 2022.

Moving The Matrix to 2022 is probably the easiest to justify. Just move it by a couple of weeks to Jan. Few people are gonna be cancelling their subscription right now because a movie months away isn't doing the HBO Max thing anymore.

Am I missing something or am I not reading this correctly?  According to BoxOfficeMojo, August 2019 had 717.6m and August 2021 has 207.6m.  Isn't that more like a 70% drop?  August 2017 was 424m.  Did the numbers and years get mixed up?
