Lionsgate execs have lost their mind.  They are trying to play hardball with everyone, even US theaters for a minute until they got told to shut the fuck up and get back in line.

What leverage do they possibly imagine they had with... moonfall 🤨

I mean if you're gonna try to swing your dick around, make sure it's not a half inch first.

Nevermind Moonfall, can we talk about how Roland Emmerich has a framed photo of the six-day opening for Godzilla on his wall in the photo for the Hollywood Reporter article? (For the uninitiated: Godzilla ‘98 was widely expected to break The Lost World’s 72.1 weekend record, then barely passed that mark in double the time.)

140 million for this thing holy crap. Whoever funded this is about to be out like 135 million dollars.

That's the brilliance of contemporary Hollywood funding -- the money can/does come from multiple different sources, not just any one studio!  Dat China funding, too...they know no limits...

"One of the biggest 'independent' movies ever produced..."

[People forget that Lionsgate is not one of the big-top-Hollywood film studios.]

Piecing together a $140M movie without a streamer or traditional big five studio was an epic feat in itself. Key partners include North American distributor Lionsgate, Chinese outfit Huayi as main financier, AGC Studios and its international distribution partners (such as German buyer Leonine, which splashed out at Cannes), CAA Media Finance (which brokered much of the dealmaking), East West Bank as agent, MUFG Union Bank and SPG3 Entertainment. Scanline VFX, Pixomondo, Framestore and DNEG are aboard for VFX.

I love how it's just the numbers and no context, lmao

Emmerich to McKay “Don’t Look Up was trash”

Once Don't Look Up was a huge streaming hit, I thought the Moonfall ad campaign would be more overt about taking shots: "The planet's in danger: here's a movie where the heroes fight till the end!" or something like that. Like how Wendy's says their burgers are never frozen or how the Victoria's Secret competitors used to make digs about Angels. There's always an audience for disaster movies. Whether it's much of a theatrical audience these days, who can say...

DOn't Look Up was not very good, but "Trash" is a bit much.

Question is whether or not there is a 140 Million dollar worth of audience.

As for funding, Emmrich went the route he did because the major studios  would not back this project given Emmerich recent box office record.

Problem is that Apocaltic destruction has been done to death; it's old hat nowdays.

I didn't know theaters were in a place of turning movies away, that's good to know. I won't feel bad about the big studios taking movies to streaming anymore.

Yeah, that isn't what happened and when is or has Lionsgate ever been a big studio?

The movie is awful and the ticket sales so far are equally awful.

I would love for every single theatrical exclusive movie to do well post-pandemic, but I won't fell when this crashes and burns this weekend.

Is it awful even if you have a high tolerance for shitty disaster movies? Asking for someone who really enjoyed The Day After Tomorrow

That someone being me lol
