BOT Revisiting: Top 25 Movies of 2008 | Deadline - September 7 | Read the eligibility rules...Ethan Hunt taking over...send lists to him

Recommended Posts

Looking over this I've just realized how great a year 2008 was for R-rated comedy. Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, In Bruges if you wanna count it.

Also, even though there weren't many great blockbusters, 2008 had three of the best and most important of the last fifteen years. Wall-E was the movie that solidified Pixar as a quality machine. And of course, The Dark Knight and Iron Man represent the pinnacle of the superhero genre. And the Cloverfield franchise was born!

I'm curious about revisiting Gran Torino to find out just how racist it is.

8. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - A-

It's a 2007 film. It had a qualifying run in the US in 2007 so it was eligible for the Oscars.

I don't think film festivals should count, but that's just me. Its official theatrical release in the States wasn't until February 1 2008. This is according to both Wikipedia and IMDB.

For example, The Hurt Locker premiered at festivals in 2008 but would definitely be considered a 2009 film.

You're better off checking BOM. It had a commercial run in 2007.

See Jake's post.

Also I am not talking about festivals, but an actual qualifying run. All a film needs to do is release in 1 theater for 1 week. Sometimes box office isn't even tracked from that release. But it is sufficient to make it a film for that year.

Interesting that BOM is the only place you can find info on that quick run...also interesting to realize that they don't do this anymore. When was the last time a movie opened for a few weeks, then left theaters until a month later?

These days a "one week qualifying run" means it opens at the end of December, then plays for the next month or two like any other movie.

Diving Bell never did leave theaters to come back later. It played from November till April like a typical awards-season platform release. I don't know what made IMDb and Wiki think it didn't open until February.

Ghibli and other foreign animated films still do the one week run in November or December and then don't get a full release until the following spring.

Here is a list that maps 210 of the 2008 films.  They all should qualify for this list too.  Ten of them are documentaries/foreign films featured at the 2009 Academy Awards.  Direct to video sequels from major motion pictures are included.  About twenty independent features are also on the list, but you could probably pick apart letterboxd.com and find 90 more.

The first 50 movies probably shows what is on critics top 25 2008 movie lists.

The next 110 or so are a mix of movies with good positive reception along with cult classics.

The last 50 movies are the forgotten ones and are usually where most FYC's come from.

I ranked them based on the average scores from Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, and Metacritic.
I took the 2 Metacritic scores, the 2 Rotten Tomatoes scores, and the IMDB score, then combined them and averaged it out.
After they were all ranked by number, I re-arranged it based on individual scores along with cinemascore and opening weekend per theater average.  The list is lazy with not keeping up on the reception with independent films, so there might be some obvious holes.

FYC

- Mirrors was interesting.  (Unrated Cut)  I tried to focus as much as possible at studying the mirrors and the interactions they were having with characters.  It did a good job at hinting towards things like addiction and schizophrenia when people were seeing things from the reflection and yelling at the mirrors.  The thing that was mystifying to me though was whatever part of the consciousness that was exchanging itself through the mirrors all those years.  What exactly got trapped in there?  I watched this one with two breaks, seeing it as three 30-minute episodes.  It helped with the addition of Kiefer Sutherland's familiar face when zoning into each episode.  The third act was a little disappointing.  Seems they had a lot going on that was condensed and unexplained, but I think if I read the book, book-to-film, or both, it should be easier to read what was going on with the paranormal moment by moment.

- Blindness is the one I'm fronting with a high vote on the list and as a strong FYC recommendation.  It is a miserable film with a surprising rape scene, but I got into it by grasping every frame from the first hour and taking note of it.  I assumed it to be a perfect movie and deduced points for imperfections.  By the time the rape part happened at 1:07:, my note taking of the film went on hiatus.  The sci-fi elements were what kept me on a high horse of thinking 100/100 trying to battle through and excuse any contradiction or flaw the first hour.

you can!

You should submit a minimum of 15 movies, although try to submit 25 if you can.  Each film will be scored as such:

1st place - 25 points

2nd place - 24 points

3rd place - 23 points

etc

If you would like to submit more than 25 films, 26-50 will be worth a half point, and 51-100 will be worth a quarter point.  You may not submit more than 100 (I highly doubt anyone will try to do this, but just in case)

Here is another one FYC:

star-wars-the-clone-wars-200811040233360

I wrote a little summary around the first 30 minutes too.

Star Wars: Clone Wars has the best introduction titles outside of the cannon.  The others are Solo and Rogue One.  When the Lucasfilm logo shows, you hear radio transmissions from an intergalactic space battle and then the Star Wars logo comes up.  Instead of text scrolling across the screen, you get a quick narration.  It is challenging because one of the first things they state is ‘after the battle of Geonisis’.  This is where the arena battle and the first clone wars happened in the Attack of the Clones.  The basic Star Wars broadcast narrator goes on to state, during a space battle sequence, that Count Dooku and the Separatist army in the droid side of the clone wars has gained control over hyperspace lanes in the galaxy which made it easier for the separatists to win over and annex other plants tied to overall galactic political structure.  Relative of the Hutt’s and out on the outskirts, Jabba the Hutt resides on and were an easy target during the beginning of the war.  His is kidnapped by some unknown renegades.  Back in Coruscant headquarters, Chancellor Palpatine and Mace Windu discuss this happening.  Palpatine feels the Jedi would be best to go to the outskirts, or wherever the Hutt’s son was taken and bring him back to satisfy Jabba.  Only Anakin and Obi-Wan are available which is fine by the Chancellor to send them.

As far as the action, you start off with a land battle.  Anakin and Obi-Wan are trying to master the level, there are a lot of video game combination recreation moves with the Jedi, and the troops of clones and droids feature large strategical numbers. They go through another battle and try to capture the head official of a planet.  Through this battle, they push the front lines, while light years away, Yoda and the fleet are met with resistance against the Separatist and droid defense fleet.  Yoda wants to get the fleet past the blockade and to aid General Kenobi on the outskirts.  Yoda orders Obi-Wan to handle a treaty with Jabba the Hutt while Skywalker is to take a newfound apprentice and find and apprehend Jabba’s kidnapped son.  The Jedi pairings in the land battles are strong as they are super force sensitive.  Palpatine has command of the clone army while the Jedi will act on will as generals or just as Jedi, hence Yoda trying to make a push past the Separatist space blockade.  Anakin realizes his new apprentice Ahsoka Tano is worse at following direction than he is, but he seems to find this as a virtue and reason to progress training.  The action briefly stops.  At the thirty-minute point, you are entering the third battle already.  The Clone Wars is masterfully done moment by moment, and although it gets close, it is no The Dark Knight to reign supreme at the top of film in 2008.  Still, The Clone Wars is a complete attack on the senses.  The Star Wars brand stays true to taking a character from the original and drawing a line from them to the new movie directly as the main focus of the plot.  It does everything The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi does with turning and painting original scenes, feelings, and nostalgic moments and recreating them in the new series.  The prequels carried themselves, but Clone Wars does the same thing episodes 7 and 8 do.  The sudden placement of watching a cartoon directly in Star Wars battle can take one out of understanding the entire movie, so I recommend watching this with subtitles, but be sure to absorb the subtitles and everything else going on.

97/100

hey derby people, there is a list due in a few days on Friday covering 2008 movies.  I think the average person can put together a list of 20-30 2008 films.  Anyone want to revisit The Dark Knight and find out of it is  #1.  Can you make it unanimous?  The ultimate roadmap of 210 movies is also posted above where you can select from.  Can this section of the internet on BOT represent some of the more random assortment of list of films?
